When Arne Mason gifted me his catalogue of cutting dies, this was one of his designs that I first looked to make.

The tabs on the sides of this leather fly wallet offer structure, so I've dubbed it a box rather than a wallet.

British Brown color is cowhide from the Hermann Oak tannery in MO, USA.

For rod tubes >55": Limitations with the length of the leather hides are such that I need to use two pieces of leather sewn together with a French seam ~halfway down the tube (a little less than half way if you have a trunk handle).

This is for purchase of the basic fly rod case. Trunk handle and shoulder strap can be purchased separately.

Arne gave me so many of his dies/patterns/forms that I haven't had a chance to digest them all. I'll often use a client's interest in one of those products as a catalyst to learn how to make it.

The leather case for a Wheatley fly box was one of those situations.

Wheatley boxes come in many different dimensions and it would be burdensome to try to list them here or stock them all. The limiting factor is the box's width. I'm able to make cases for Wheatley boxes in the following dimensions:

Length: up to 6"

Width: 3.5" only

Depth: 1 1/8", 1", 7/8", 5/8"

Design:

My preference is a cowhide exterior with a goat skin lining, but you could reverse it, or make one side the inverse of the other, or make it all cowhide. All slips require at least one layer of cowhide on each side for rigidity and forming. You can really make these your own.
